The Vigilante Superhero
The vigilante superhero makes it a personal duty to uphold justice and operates outside of legal authorization in order to do so. The vigilante will actively seek out perceived evil to apprehend or wrongs to right. Examples of the vigilante superhero include Batman, Spider-Man, Mr. Incredible, and the Punisher.
The Pros:
Lack of accountability. You don’t answer to anyone, and you are capable of accepting only jobs and missions that adhere to your moral standards.
The Cons:
Depending on how far you operate outside the law and how sloppy you are, you could find yourself in very deep legal trouble - and you will slip up eventually. You’ll also have to pay for your own goods/medical care unless you have someone to help with that, or aren’t above stealing from the villains (and who do you think they stole from in the first place?). Not having any accountability also means that it can be all too easy to become as bad as the villains you hunt as you become more jaded and cynical. If you maintain a secret identity, you’re still going to need to balance your double life, or like the Punisher, go into hiding.
