The Rules
From The Writerium - the wiki for writers
What goes here?
- Lists. "Things I Would Do If I Were The (Character Type)" lists, lists of common medical screwups people make when writing hospital stories, and lists of other odds and ends. If it helps a writer, it's listable.
- Genres. Pages for genres and what makes them what they are. Also point out their absurdities and various twists you could add.
- Weapons, how they were used, why they were developed, and why they aren't used anymore. Historical notes are also particularly useful, particularly on the lifestyles of other cultures.
- Common absurdities and blunders found in genres, races, etc.
- Tips and ideas for avoiding common problems and absurdities in writing.
- Pages on various aspects of writing mechanics and literary devices.
- And more. ;)
What doesn't go here?
- Do-and-Don't lists about writing and character creation.
- Adult/mature content.
- Pages dedicated to trope/cliche examples. That's what TVTropes is for. ;)
- Pages on tropes/cliches that have nothing to do with writing mechanics, worldbuilding, character creation, or storytelling.
- Looooooong lists of trope examples. (Keep examples limited from 3-5 when using examples to explain something.)
- Pages on fantasy creatures that were invented by modern authors.
What else?
- If you are unfamiliar with editing MediaWiki pages, please visit this tutorial first.
- Everything must be written in proper English. Correct spelling, capitalization, and punctuation are required.
- Try to be as objective as possible.
- Trope examples are required now and then, but keep them limited to about 3-5 examples and keep them on the relevant page.
- Please do not put big huge honkin' pictures up on the pages, nor pictures hosted on sites that do not belong to you and/or do not allow hotlinking.
- Links to your sources are always good - if for example you put up medical information, a link to a medical webpage backing it up would be extra helpful.
